Meatballs in tomato sauce

For meatballs

500g ground beef
2 slices white bread
1 egg
1 tablespoon garlic-ginger paste
2 red chillies
1 medium onion
3 tablespoons cilantro leaves
3 tablespoons fresh mint leaves
1/4 cup warm milk
1/2 cup all purpose flour
Salt and pepper to taste
4 tablespoons olive oil for frying

For the tomato sauce

2 large tomatoes
1 medium onion
1 teaspoon garlic- ginger
70g canned tomato paste
Cinnamon stick (optional)
1-2 bay leaves
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup water
Salt and pepper to taste
Cilantro and cheddar cheese for garnish


Prepare ingredients for the tomato sauce; place tomato and onion in a food processor to make a puree; mince garlic; grate ginger, finely chop parsley leaves for garnish

Remove crust and dice bread

Prepare ingredients for the meatballs; mince garlic; grate ginger; finely chop cilantro and mint leaves; dice onion and red chillies into very small pieces

In a small bowl, combine bead with the warm milk. Press the bread down into the milk to fully submerse and soak into the bread. Mix until soft

In a large bowl, add the beef, egg, milk-bread mixture, garlic-ginger paste, red chillies, cilantro, mint, onion,  salt and pepper; mix until well combined

Divide beef into small balls, coat with all purpose flour

In a large saucepan over medium high heat, bring the 4 tablespoons of oil to boil. Add meatballs, cook until browned (but not well cooked) on all sides, about a minute or 2. Transfer meatballs on a plate, put aside

Boil the 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Add cinnamon, bay leaves, garlic-ginger paste, cook until garlic-ginger paste is tender. Stir in tomato-onion puree and tomato paste; cook until tomatoes are well cooked, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper

Add in water until it starts boiling. Add meatballs, cook covered over low heat for about 20 minutes or until until meatballs are cooked through and sauce thickens; stirring the sauce occasionally

Garnish with parsley leaves

Serve as desired, garnish with cheese
